Grant, Edward (1546-01-01 - 1601-08-04)

Edward Grant was a scholar at Wesminster School from 1557 until his matriculation at St John's College, Cambridge in 1564. He migrated to Oxford, graduating B.A. from Exeter College in 1573 and proceeding M.A. the same year. He was incorporated M.A. at Cambridge, was awarded his B.Th. at Cambridge in 1578/9 and D.D. in 1588. He was made university preacher in 1580. Between 1572 and 1592 he served as headmaster of Westminster School, building its reputation during his time there. He published a Greek grammar in 1575 (reissued in 1597) and several translations of contemporary texts. He was presented to the prebends of Westminster (1576) and of Ely (1589). He held multiple rectorships: Shenley (1581-85), South Benfleet (1584-85), Bintree (1586-94), Foulsham (1586-94), East Barnet (from 1591), Algarkirk (from 1594), and Toppesfield (from 1598). He and his wife Susan had at least three children: Sarah, Gabriel, and John. Grant died on 4 August 1601 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
