The exact date of birth of John Reading is not known. He was born in Buckinghamshire and matriculated from Magdalen Hall, Oxford on 4 May 1604 at the age of sixteen. He graduated B.A. on 17 October 1607 and proceeded M.A. from St Mary Hall on 22 June 1610. In February 1612 he was ordained deacon; on 19 June 1614, he was ordained priest. On 2 December 1616, he was appointed minister of St Mary the Virgin, Dover. He was imprisoned in April 1642 by parliamentary forces. In 1644, he was instituted to the rectory of Cheriton, Kent. He was imprisoned once again on 8 January 1647; his livings were sequestered. In October 1660, his loyalty to the Royalist cause was rewarded with a D.D. from Oxford, at the request of King Charles II. His living of Cheriton was restored in the Restoration, although he resigned it before August 1662. Reading died on 26 October 1667.
