According to Erica Longfellow, Donne was most likely invited to preach at the marriage of Margaret Washington by her mistress Lady Doncaster, who had negotiated the match. Appended to a treatise on marriage "drawen by Mr Richard Sherwood at the request of the honorable lady Theodosia Dudly, whom it concerned". This speech seems to have been a sermon, judging by the content and layout, but is not explicitly described as such.
