Born in London in 1597, Walter Stonehouse was a scholar of Wadham College, Oxford. He graduated B.A. on 25 February 1616/17, proceeding M.A. from Magdalen College, Oxford on 11 December 1619. He was a Fellow of Magdalen College from 1617 until 1629. On 3 December 1628, Stonehouse was licensed to preach, and he was awarded the degree of B.D. on 16 April 1629. He served as rector of Darfield, West Riding of Yorkshire, from 1631. Stonehouse was a keen amateur botanist and gardener; his catalogue of plants in his garden at Darfield, along with a drawing, survives in the John Goodyer Collection of Botanical Books (Magdalen College, Oxford). He also owned a copy of William Langland's Piers Plowman, now University of Liverpool, LUL MS.F.4.8 (see link below).
