19 autograph sermons by Walter Stonehouse, fellow of Magdalen College, preached at various locations from c.1623-39. Preceding the sermons is a prayer that encompasses Great Britain and Ireland, France, the sovereign James, Frederick (Count Elector Palatine) and his wife Elizabeth, the whole nobility, gentry, and community of this land, archbishops, two bishops, Oxford and Cambridge, William Earl of Pembroke Lord Chamberlain, Magdalen and Wadham Colleges, right down through a list of founders and benefactors. Following the final column of sermons is a folio with the entire contents listed, including biblical texts.
Sermons written in a clean, tiny, tidy hand on both sides of large folios. Formatted in double columns (593 in total) within red ruled lines. No pagination; instead, each column is numbered with a catchword at the end of the second column of each leaf (recto and verso). Titles are repeated as running heads on each leaf (recto and verso).
Title page with heavy black borders and red ruled lines detailing the number of sermons and the author, accompanied by an engraved label of an eagle on a perch with a scroll bearing the words "Servus natus theologus."
The volume of sermons was secured, according to William Macray, by John Bloxam from the Bristol bookseller Kerslake at an unknown date (Magdalen College Archive Catalogue)
