Franklin matriculated from Queens' College, Cambridge in 1647 without graduating. After various endeavours to find a remunerative post, he received a benefice at Westhall, Suffolk, but was ejected in 1662. By 1669 he was preaching at Blue Anchor Lane. About 1683, he moved to Goat Alley, near Bunhill Fields. In 1695 he was preaching at Plasterers' Hall in Addle Street. Over his career, he was imprisoned several times for nonconformity.
