This is perhaps the American physiologist and army colonel, John Call Dalton (1825-1889), although he died before the claim on Gibson's papers in 1896 (see GEMMS entry on Drafts by Edmund Gibson of Three Sermons [Bodleian MS. Eng. d. 2407]).
