This volume contains three drafts of sermons by Edmund Gibson. These drafts are bound together with (ff. 10-22v) a fair copy of another sermon from 1728, which was transcribed by his great-great-great grandson; (ff. 37-8) a list of some of texts for sermons used by Gibson preached; and (ff. 39-52) a sermon by his grandson, Edmund Gibson, rector of Bishop's Stortford, 1789.

Although many of Gibson's papers were deposited at Lambeth Palace Library after his death, these papers were apparently retained by Gibson's immediate descendants for many years. Sometime before 1889, they were given to a Mr. Collis. In 1889, his son, Mr. George Collis, offered them for sale, and they were purchased by the Revd. Dr. W. J. Sparrow Simpson, Librarian of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. They remained in the Cathedral Library until 1896 when three of Gibson's descendants made a successful claim for most of the papers. The Bodleian's holdings came from the portion of the papers claimed by one of these descendants, Colonel J.C. Dalton. Many of the volumes still bear the bookplates and reference numbers of St. Paul's Cathedral Library, and the bookplates of Colonel Dalton.
This manuscript originally was deposited in the Bodleian in 1960 by Edmund Gibson's descendant, Major-General Sir Charles J.G. Dalton. It was purchased from Major-General Dalton in 1988.
