Chalmers was born in Aberdeen but following his education (MA) relocated to London, where he became editor of several newspapers. His publishing career subsequently expanded into the production of literary and biographical works including enlarging "The General Biographical Dictionary" (1798) and "The Works of the English Poets, from Chaucer to Cowper" (1810).
