Gilbert was Scottish, but moved to England by 1644. He served as rector of Cheadle, Cheshire, 1646-ca. 1653, and then rector of Ealing, Middlesex from 1651, but was ejected after the Restoration in 1660. He went to Massachusetts in July 1661, where he became the minister in Topsfield, Massachusetts in 1663.
