A volume of sermons signed by Thomas Gilbert, which was written in 1646. 1646 is marked on first page but internal citations to printed books place some of the English sermons later. Includes Gilbert's notes for sermons preached between 1646-ca.1651 in Cheadle and between ca. 1663- ca.1671 in Topsfield, Mass. Sermons are primarily about the Lord's Supper but also include material on how to pray, on dealing with affliction. The last section includes notes on church, and prayers.
Octavo volume, leather binding, some gilding. Volume was bound later. Last section of volume also added later with flyleaves/stubs, includes references to "Old England," etc.
On first page: "Tho: Gilbert his book. Anno Dom: 1646. Mar. 8 I came to Cheadle". Manuscript later was part of the library of Increase Mather.
Presented to the AAS in 1814 by Isaiah Thomas, who had purchased the manuscript from Hannah Mather Crocker.

Gilbert was Scottish, served in a parish in Cheadle, but was ejected after Restoration. In 1661, he went to New England, and became minister in Topsfield, Massachusetts in 1663.
