Samuel Bolton (1606-1654) was the son of William Bolton of Lancashire. He was educated at Manchester School and Christ's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1629 and proceeded M.A. in 1632. He was minister of St Martin Ludgate, London, c. 1638-1641, and subsequently minister of St Saviour's, Southwark, for seven years. He also held a post as lecturer at At Anne and St Agnes, Aldersgate and preached regularly at St Andrew's, Holborn during the 1640s. In 1642, Bolton was appointed to the Westminster Assembly. His publications include a series of fast sermons ('A Tossed Ship' (1644)) and 'The Guard of the Tree of Life' (1645). The latter appeared in numerous editions. Bolton was elected Master of his alma mater, Christ's, in 1645, and served as Vice-Chancellor of the university in 1650-1652. He had been awarded D.D. in 1650. He died on 16 October 1654 and was buried four days later.
