Born July 1663, the son of an elder David Brown, minster of Craigie, Ayrshire. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Glasgow on 9 November 1687, and ordained to Neilston, Renfrewshire on 12 March 1688. He was called to the Blackfriars Glasgow on 28 November 1692. He married Katherine Blackwell (d. 25 February 1717) and had four children, David, minister of Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire; Elizabeth (married in 1707 to George Fordyce); Janet (b. 1692, buried 26 May 1762); and Christian (married Gilbert Anderson, minister of Fordoun, Aberdeenshire).
