Born at St. Columb, Cornwall, John King graduated B.A. from Exeter College, Oxford in 1678; he proceeded M.A. in 1681 and was created D.D. at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge in 1698. King was made rector of Pertenhall, Beds. in 1690 and of Chelsea in 1694, and was appointed prebend of York in 1718; he may also have served as rector of West Wycombe from 1684 and 1695 and of Harrold, Beds. from 1697 to 1710. King published two sermons as well as a defense of John Atherton (the bishop of Waterford, executed for buggery in 1640) and responses to Increase Mathers and John Toland. He was married twice and fathered six children, one of whom was the physician and classical scholar John King. He died at Church Lane, Chelsea in 1732 and was buried in the chancel of Pertenhall church.
