Sharp, Thomas (1693-12-12 - 1758-03-16)

Thomas Sharp was born on 12 December 1693. His father was John Sharp (1645?-1714), archbishop of York. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School and St Paul's School, London. On 25 April 1709, he was admitted at Trinity College, Cambridge; he became a Jermyn scholar the following year. Sharp graduated B.A. in 1713 as a wrangler and proceeded M.A. in 1716. He had already been elected to a fellowship in 1715. On 16 June 1716, he was ordained deacon in London; in February 1718, he was ordained priest at York. Sharp became prebend of Wistow in the diocese of York on 8 May 1719; he was to hold this office until his death. In this year, he was also instituted to the living of Ormesby, Yorkshire. In 1723, he became rector of Rothbury, Northumberland, and archdeacon of Northumberland. Thomas Sharp was awarded the degree of D.D. in 1729. On 1 December 1732 he became prebend of Durham Cathedral. He died at Durham on 16 March 1758, and was buried a week later at Durham Cathedral.
