Sermon Notes etc. by Roger Brierley
Shelfmark
MS 3461
Creation Date
1630 - 1632
Contents Note

Fair copies of notes (apparently taken by an auditor) on 25 of Brierley's sermons. They were copied by a contemporary, probably his disciple Josiah Collier. The sermons are preceded by a note to the reader (pp. 1-4) and followed by other materials intended to rehabilitate Brierley's reputation, including verses written by Collier (pp. 252-263, 311-314), a letter by Brierley to Anne Pethye on spiritual matters (pp. 225-228), and verses about Brierley by Willam Aylin (pp. 229-249). The initials J.C. (presumably Collier) are written on the introduction. The volume also includes a sermon by Collier on John 15:1 (pp. 287-309).

Material Features

viii + 317 pages. Unfoliated; the original pagination has been used here. Table of contents on p. v. The sermons are preceded by a note on p. 4: "Here followeth certaine shorte notes or heads of some seuerall sermons publikely preached more fully by Roger Breirley sometime minister at Grindleton Chappell in Craven." No preaching locations are given with the sermons, so it is assumed they were preached at Grindleton.

Provenance

The table of contents (p. v) identifies the volume as "Madam Baildon['s] Booke". Names of previous owners are written at the back of the volume: Thomas Legard (1697), William Garth (1697), Timothy Ledgard, and John Steach. Also include is a small bookplate naming J. Sunderland of Skipton, Yorkshire.

Acquisition

Donated to LPL by Margaret Bryant in 1987.

Source of Data

Anne James; Lambeth Palace manuscript catalogue

Other Note

14 of the 25 sermons in this volume are printed in a collection of Brierley's works: J[osiah] C[ollier], ed., A Bundle of Soul-Convincing, Directing and Comforting Truths (1677). The manuscript uses Old Style dates.
