Acquisition

Carte's manuscripts were acquired through a series of transactions between 1753 and 1778, but catalogues from these transactions have not survived, so it is unclear when precisely this manuscript was acquired. Thomas Carte donated many of his father's MSS to the Bodleian Library between in 1753 and 1754. Some were left to the Bodleian in Thomas's will and were acquired in 1757. Some still were bequeathed by Thomas's widow and were acquired in 1771. Some were owned by her husband, whose interest in the manuscript was purchased by the Bodleian in 1778.
