Title
Five Books of Sermons
Shelfmark
MS I.i.16
Creation Date
ca. 1668 - 1669
Contents Note

Five books of summarized sermons. Each has its own heading and the sermons are dated. Locations are not indicated. Thomas Watson, the preacher, preached in various meetinghouses in London during this period.

Material Features

This is a beautiful volume: neat, clear, wide red-ruled margins; heavy paper of good quality. The volume is bound in half leather with blind tooling, and, on the spine, gold tooling and lettering, "WATSON'S MSS." The contents of the entire manuscript are written in detail in the first unfoliated, unpaginated leaves. Each of the five books has a thematic heading printed in large black lettering. The initial letter of each "book" is enlarged and decorated in detail. Occasionally, manicules appear in the margins, as do indications of the structural divisions (but not scriptural references). It is unlikely that these are written in Watson's hand, but this is not certain.
