GEN MSS 202, Box 1, Folder 1
Creation Date
1615 - 1658
Contents Note

Volume contains 40 autograph sermons by John Davenport preached at Hilton Castle near Durham between November 1615 and March 1616. Additional material includes examination responses in Latin from May 1625 (ff. 17r-18v), and various notes. A note at the beginning of the manuscript (f. 2v) explains that the volume contains "40 sermons preached 1615 when at 18," but the cataloguer description also mentions sermons preached at New Haven, Connecticut, between 1656 and 1658 and a copy of a letter from Davenport in his own hand to A. Leighton about kneeling at the Sacrament and other subjects relating to conformity from 1626/7. These do not appear in the digitized version of the manuscript, suggesting it has not been completely digitized.

Material Features

The manuscript is divided into two volumes with 86 leaves in each volume. (Foliation is continuous over both volumes.) The cataloguer notes that some pages are badly damaged by acid ink, making them illegible.

Acquisition

Gift to the Yale Library by the Hon. James Davenport in 1794, and A. B. Davenport in 1894.
