Contents Note

This is a presentation copy of three sermons. The manuscript opens with one blank leaf, which is followed by a printed catalogue entry that has been pasted in. A piece of vellum has been pasted onto the third leaf (recto) of the volume, on which is written 'A New Yeares Gifte. Mr Alex: Strange ministe[r] of Buntingforde'. This was presumably part of the original vellum binding. This leaf is followed by a title page for the sermons, which reads as follows: 'Three Sermons made vpon severall occasiones. The first at St Maryes in Cambridge / The seconde at the Assizes at Hart-forde / The thirde at Woodhall Hatfeelde. By Alex: Str: Bach: in Diuinitye.' An ensuing dedicatory epistle is addressed to Ralph Sadleir and consists of three pages. It is written in Latin and dated 'Januar. Anno 1610'.

Material Features

Quarto. Calf binding, featuring the Inner Temple coat of arms on the front and back covers. There are gold gilt edges. The endpapers are marbled. There is a bookplate of the Inner Temple Library on the inside front cover of the volume. The pages have faded red rulings.

Acquisition

Although this manuscript has been catalogued as a Petyt Manuscript, it was actually presented by Mrs Anne Sadleir, who made the gift in 1661. Her gift was intended as a tribute to her father, Sir Edward Coke, who had studied at Inner Temple. The Petyt Collection was largely bequeathed to the Benchers of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple by William Petyt (1637-1707) in 1707.
