Material Features

A series of individually bound pamphlets, without item numbers, containing 89 sermons. Many are paginated, but beginning from numbers other than 1, suggesting that they were once part of larger volumes. Written in a very small neat hand. Some pamphlets have extensive damp damage which makes them difficult to read. Within the pamphlets, different sections are highlighted and divided with drawn lines. The sermons seem to be in the preacher's hand, and either are fair copies or were used for preaching at a later date as a few have several dates of preaching.

Provenance

Accompanied by a letter dated 13th September 1841 addressed to a priest at Marsfield: “Dear Sir, I have herewith sent you what manuscript sermons I have of the Revd. Walton’s formerly minister at Marsden Chapel, also a copy of Resolutions found in his study after his death, with some parchment connected with his office and also “A Treatise on the Souls travel from Bodage to Liberty” by a Rvd Mitchel preacher of the Gospel, but when, or where, I know not but very likely some acquaintance & contemporary of Mr Walton’s. / You will find the Sermons in a very confused and [~ed] state but perhaps you will be able to reduce them unto some kind of order. I have no doubt but you will feel pleased with the perusal, as finding you in possession …. It appears by the dates in the Resolutions that Mr Walton was contemporary with our Mr Meeke, a pious goodly man, and a considerable benefactor to our church and Free school… John Narley".
