Contents Note

Autograph sermon notes of Curwen's sermons preached from 1701-03, mainly as a guest preacher in Cambridge lead by Brattle. Each sermon notes the preacher or individual who asked him to give the sermon.

Material Features

On first page, inscribed: "George Corwins Book Anno Domi 1702 7 December Scribit:". Curwen makes use of old style dating, which means that 1 May is sometimes written as 1/3.

Provenance

The Curwen Family Papers in the Philips Library are made up of 6 series: I. Captain George Curwen (1610-1684/5) Papers; II. Jonathan Curwen (1640-1718) Papers; III. Jonathan Curwen (1640-1718) Papers; IV. Samuel (1715-1802) and George Curwen (1717-1746) Papers; V. Curwen Relatives' Papers; VI. Other. The material is the reorganised contents of four scrapbook volumes, forty-six journal, letter book and account book volumes and many other items.

Acquisition

The bulk of the manuscripts came to the Essex Institute in 1916 from the American Antiquarian Society. Volume 10, a daybook, was donated by George Rea Curwen in 1887. The 1666 and 1737 religious meditation books were an 1890 gift from George Rea Curwen. The April 28, 1717 Reverend George Curwen sermon was a 1960 gift from Russell A. Sibley.
