The versos for this sermon contain introductory paragraphs suitable for different occasions or for a series of sermons on this text. One introductory paragraph refers to the preacher’s “duty” to preach to the people “of their duty to our king”. Another speaks of the behaviour of all good Christians “towards their ciuill superior” and the blessings promised to the obedient. The paragraph refers to a sermon “formerly” preached on this topic and text.

Description

A sermon against religious disorder. On one occasion (9 September 1683) it was preached as a thanksgiving sermon "for ye dyscovery of ye plott against ye king & Duke" (the Rye House Plot). There is evidence of major revision to the sermon.
