Contents Note

A collection of 32 sermons preached by James Broun (Brown) at the Inner High Church in Glasgow, from May 1709 until September 1710. The sermons may have been written down by a 'George Dainziell' who signed his name along with a note (dated to 1714) about the death of Broun and his funeral, and again as follows - 'George Dainzeill his book 1751.' The beginning and end of the MS also contains a number of notes in later hands, including an unsigned address to parents, teachers and children. There is a short index at the end of the final sermon, detailing the contractions used throughout i.e. 'L for Lord, I for Jesus.' There is also 35 pages of text (that is not sermons) within the body of the MS (in reverse order from the sermons).

Material Features

Leather bound notebook (11 x 17 cm) with some damage to the binding, the original clasps are missing. There are a few torn pages but the MS is otherwise in good condition. There is good legibility throughout. c.120 folios in total, no pagination or foliation.

Provenance

Folio 1r notes that the MS was 'bought at the late Principal Lee's sale, Coulterman, Thursday, April 4, 1861.'

Acquisition

The MS was purchased by the University of Glasgow from Richard Cameron of Edinburgh in 1880.
