Contents Note

This is the third of four MSS that are catalogued together as 'Various Sermons Preached in 1695-1700.' The sermons were taken down by Robert Wodrow, in this period he was not yet a minister but was a librarian at the University of Glasgow. This MS contains Wodrow's notes from 135 sermons dated between 1696 and 1697. The inside front cover has an unidentified hand-drawn emblem featuring the date, and the following inscription - 'This book was begun on Thursday January 16 1696.' There is a contents/index list detailing the preacher, book/chapter/verse of scripture and page number of corresponding sermons.

Material Features

A small leather bound notebook, there is some fraying to the binding but it remains in good condition overall. The paper is in very good condition throughout. There are some incorrectly numbered pages - after p.126 the page numbering jumps backward to p.124, p.305 is duplicated and pp.236-237 and 240-241 are accidentally written as pp.336-337 and 340-341.The final 5 pages are in reverse - these appear to be sermon notes but there are no identifying markers of date etc. There are page numbers which are original to the MS, with c.363 pages in total.

Acquisition

Part of a collection of papers of Robert Wodrow held by the University of Glasgow. The manuscript was acquired from Charles W Wodrow Thomson on 8th July 1891.
