A note preceding f. 1v, signed by Simonds D'Ewes, reads as follows: 'These Sermons or Notes of Sermons following of Mr Chattertons (being liuing in Cambridg this present yeare 1637. & aged 92. yeares or thereabouts) weere written by Paul D'Ewes late of Stowhall in the Countie of Suff: Esquire with his owne hande whilest hee was a student in the universitie of Cambridge as I gather. Hee deceased on the 14th day of March being monday a[nn]o d[o]mi[ni]. 1630 [...]'.
The Harleian Library was founded by Robert Harley, First Earl of Oxford (1661-1724). According to Cyril Ernest Wright, Robert Harley 'was primarily interested in English historical and political material and in volumes of sermons and theological controversy, sharing in the latter the taste of his Harley ancestors'.
