ca. 1672 - 1689
Contents Note

48 sermons, many of which conclude with hymns, preached between 1672 and 1689. The sermons have been attributed to John Kettlewell, although they are not in his hand and in some cases predate his ordination as deacon in 1677. Thomas Bayly (p. 844) and Mr Weeks (p. 834) are also identified as preachers of one sermon each. Several sermons were preached at the house of John Simons of Bandon, Co. Cork in 1675-6 (pp. 609, 634, 701).

Material Features

871 pages. Uniform hand. Pagination mistake occurs on p.490, which is incorrectly written as p.450; pagination continues consecutively, resulting in a second set of pages numbered 450-89.

Provenance

The name "Wm. [William] Bussell" is inscribed on pp. 1 and 871, perhaps indicating that he was the owner of the manuscript. The manuscript was given by Miss Betty Kettlewell to the church of All Hallows Barking-by-the-Tower, the burial place of John Kettlewell. Bookplate belonging to the Revd. P.B. Clayton.

Acquisition

Deposited in Lambeth Palace Library by the Parochial Church Council of All Hallows Barking-by-the-Tower in 1979.

Source of Data

Other Note

The dating system used in the manuscript does not refer to months by name, but rather by number (1st month, 2nd month, etc.). It is unclear whether these numbered months are Old or New Style, i.e. if the first month is March or January. Both possibilities will be listed under the preachings.
