This manuscript volume begins with notes on a series of sermons on the Lord's Prayer and Sacraments by Richard Culverwell, rector of St Margaret Moses, London (noted between March 1626 and the early 1630s), followed by notes on sixteen sermons delivered between May 1641 and February 1657 and several sermons by Culverwell, Benjamin Needler (his son-in-law and successor at St Margaret Moses), and Needler's successor, Charles Burke. Another set of sermons (written in reverse), dated from August 1657, completes the volume.

Source of Data

Ann Hughes, 'A Moderate Puritan Preacher Negotiates Religious Change', Journal of Ecclesiastical History, 65.4 (2014), pp. 761-779; Hannah Yip.

Other Note

These full notes are accompanied with 'extensive marginal headings, references and quotations from Greek and Latin patristic and philosophical works as well as the Scriptures'. Ann Hughes conjectures that these notes were 'most likely the product of cooperation between [Richard] Culverwell himself [...] and Harper'. See Hughes, p. 762-763. This manuscript is discussed extensively in Hughes's article. For other references, see Jordan S. Downs, 'The Curse of Meroz and the English Civil War', The Historical Journal, 57.2 (2014), pp. 343-368.
