The battle in question was the Battle of Oudenarde, a battle in the War of the Spanish Succession (July 11, new style, but June 30, old style dating). The heading to the sermon notes that the "King of Frances 2 Grandsons, Bourbon J.[?] Birry, & George Chavilier [indecipherable word] at ye fight -- Many slain, Many taken". This battle was a great victory for the forces of the British, Dutch Republic, and Holy Roman Empire allies against the French.
