Notes on a sermon preached by "Mr [Luke] Clayton at Rotherham uppon ye 5th day of November", the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot.
The occasion ('Queenes daye. 1588 before the Queen') and the Biblical verse are written at the top of p. 11. This sermon features marginalia in a different hand in English and Latin (e.g. 'An anarchy', p. 11; 'instead of an Angell have a Devill', p. 14). There are also miscellaneous theological notes in Latin, written upside-down in another hand, on p. 18 ('De vocatione instrumento eius & hono 2 Thes. 2.13.14').
Complete sermon without marginal annotations. The preacher is not identified.
Complete sermon in English with divisions underlined.
The full title is "An oration or sermon of pope Sextus the Fifth of the murther and death of Henry the Third the French king made at Rome in the consistory of fathers the 11th of September in the year 1589." It was copied "ex MS. Bod. Bib. Archiv."
This sermon appears to have been preached in four parts in 1677 to mark the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot ("for the 5th of November"). A break is clearly indicated by "Amen" on f. 102v, but it is unclear where the other breaks between parts should be. For the later preachings, there is no indication of which of the four parts was preached.
