John Egerton was born on 8 June 1579. He matriculated at Brasenose College at the age of ten on 17 October 1589. He graduated B.A. on 4 July 1594. Shortly after, he became a student at Lincoln's Inn. He was M.P. for Callington in 1597 and Shropshire in 1601. Egerton was made a knight of the Bath on 24 July 1603, upon the arrival of James VI and I in England. On 27 May 1617, he became the First Earl of Bridgewater. In his declining years, he collected sermons and theological and political tracts and annotated them. Bridgewater died on 4 December 1649.
