This diary was written by Marriot, a Dissenter and member of John Shower's Presbyterian congregation in the Old Jewry, and spans the period from 13 April 1701 to 11 February 1703/4. Marriot provided short descriptions of sermons, noting the text, the preacher, the location, and sometimes including a brief assessment of the quality of the sermon. He often went to sermons on Sunday mornings and afternoons and occasionally attended three or four sermons a day. Marriot regularly heard sermons at the Old Jewry, and he frequently went to the Presbyterian meeting at the Queen's Weigh-house, Eastcheap. He also heard a number of sermons at the Anglican churches of St Mary-le-Bow and St Lawrence Jewry. Marriot noted hearing sermons by more than fifty different preachers in London, including both Dissenters and Anglicans. He often heard sermons by the Presbyterian preachers Vincent Alsop, Thomas Doolittle, Jazeb Earle, Benjamin Gravener (Grosvenor), William Harris, Michael Pope, Timothy Rogers, Samuel Rosewell, John Shower, John Spademan and William Tong. Marriot also heard the Anglicans Samuel Bradford, Richard Lucas and George Stanhope preach on multiple occasions.
